A new study suggests that the anti-stimulant drugAtomoxetinecould boost sales in the UK and the US by a quarter.

The researchers, based at the University of California, San Francisco, recruited about 400 patients with ADHD and/or ADHD-like symptoms who received Strattera, a non-stimulant, on a daily, single dose of atomoxetine, one of the mainstay of treatment for ADHD and/or ADHD-related symptoms. The study also recruited about 1,000 adults and adolescents who received stimulant medications, including stimulants.
"We found that Strattera could be particularly effective at boosting ADHD symptoms in people with ADHD," said Dr. James F. Allen, chairman of the department of psychiatry at the University of Washington, and professor of psychiatry at Stanford University. The drug is marketed under the brand nameand is used in the treatment of major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and other mental health conditions.

Strattera's market share has soared over the past several years. In the US, the company's sales have fallen to around 10% in 2004, according to IMS Health.

Wood said that, at least for the US, it could be a significant market opportunity for the company.

In the US, the drug had sales of around $1.6 billion in 2004, according to IMS Health. The drug is approved by the FDA for the treatment of ADHD and/or attention deficit disorder.
In Europe,atomoxetine sales are up 11% to $12.9 billion in 2004, according to IMS Health.
